The Kennedy Dancers Inc.
THE KENNEDY DANCERS, A PROFESSIONAL DANCE COMPANY, DANCE SCHOOL, & INNER CITY YOUTH JUNIOR DANCE COMPANY RECEIVE CITATION OF EXCELLENCE FOR THEIR WORK IN THE COMMUNITY.
CITED , IN PARTICULAR, FOR THEIR DANCE PROGRAM IN THE HUDSON COUNTY JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER SECAUCUS, NEW JERSEY, MAY 29, 2009
The New Jersey State Council on the Arts has awarded the Kennedy Dancers, Inc, a non-profit corporation, professional dance company, and dance school based in Jersey City New Jersey, a certificate of excellence as well as funding for 2009 for their ongoing Arts in the Community project at the Hudson County Juvenile Detention Center in Secaucus, New Jersey. The Kennedy Dancers has brought dance classes (in Modern, Latin, and African techniques) for over four years to the detainees at the Juvenile Detention Center.
The program’s curriculum was developed by Kennedy Dancers’ founder AND Executive Director, Diane Dragone, as part of the focus and mission to bring dance to the youth of Hudson County. This program brings a vital arts program that transcends verbalization, provides a creative physical outlet for those who are incarcerated and many times acts as a therapeutic mode that reduces anger, improves concentration, provides physical fitness, and provides a creative recreational outlet. Many of the students who are in the detention center develop a lifelong appreciation for dance and a safe form of self expression. Once teens are released if their good behavior continues, they are invited to attend dance classes, FREE of charge at the Kennedy Dancers Repertory Center, 70 Central Avenue, Jersey City, New Jersey.
This pilot program was approved and continues to be encouraged and applauded by Diana Youst, Deputy Chief and Robert Murray, Division Chief, both of the Hudson County Juvenile Detention Center (635 County Ave, Secaucus, NJ 07094).
The Kennedy Dancers “Arts in the Communities” project at the Hudson County Juvenile Detention Center is funded by the New Jersey Council on the Arts/Dept. of State, a partner of the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey Cultural Trust, PSE&G Foundation, Bank of America Foundation, and the Lillian Shenck Foundation.
